[How To]: Install Leopard with Pacifist 2.5 (under Tiger)

Postby Envying on Tue Oct 30, 2007 3:22 pm

Looks like everybody here is enjoying patching the file to a sl-dvd size and either burn it or restore it to HD partition. It is ok to do that, but to me, it is too time consuming! Here I will give a How-To on a different installation method. With Pacifist 2.5 beta, you can finish your installation much easier. The requirement for this installation is pretty much similar to what you need for patching dvd. But before doing that, you have to have pacifist 2.5 beta installed, go find it in Demon.

PS. screenshots here were taken after my real installation, just to show how to use pacifist (it was under Leopard, it can be done under tiger too)

Thanks to Joe75, iX and all other OSX86 Community Members!
Resources Link:
1. Kext Files for after installation Patching, please use this TOH Kext files, http://rapidshare.com/files/65824569/ToH_Kexts.zip
2. For AMD users, need to do a kernel patch before booting: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2032
or viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2042
3. For Intel SSE3 Users, Kernel can be found through IRC.Moofspeak.net #osx86scene or for SSE2 viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2042
This guide is good for brand new installation or upgrading on your existing mac os x system (tiger, or Leo Beta)

1. First, you need at least two partitions in HFS+ format, one bootable active tiger, one partition for you leo installation, say about 15GB free space(You can have existing Mac OS X system on it, so your installation will be a upgrade to it);
2. Open you downloaded original Leopard GM release 6.5GB DLed from TPB or Demon, you will see as pic 2 shows;
3. Since Apple hides most of the files and folders, you have to use finder to get to your destination, please click on finder menu, go to folder, type in /Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/, as it shows on pic 2.
4. Finder will open a new folder window, as pic 3, find a file called OSInstall.mpkg;

8. Select your destination partition for Leopard (pic 7);
9. Pacifist will then take care of installation, it will take about 30 mins or so to finish it up, if system ask you to confirm any overwriting or replacement, just click yes;
10. After pacifist finishes up, download ToH kext Files from post #1. Replace the kernel, and some kext files, in my case, I replaced "AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleSMBIOS.kext, IONetworkingFamily.kext" and removed "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext", repair permissions under tiger terminal;
11. Next you have to put your customized hardware kext files into the right location, and repair permissions as well, you can definitely copy those files from your tiger. But be prepared to add some of your dev/ven id into some official kext files;
12. Then reboot your system, press F8 to get to Darwin Bootloader Selecting Menu, choose your Leopard partiton, boot with "-V" to see if there is any kernel panic, report it here with a screenshot picture, to see if anyone else can give you some help how to fix the problem. Good luck! :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

lazd wrote:After an install of Leopard 10.5 via Pacifist 2.5 in 10.4.9 using Envying's guide (viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2146), I noticed that Terminal, System Profiler, Disk Utility, and RAID utility failed to launch and gave the following error:

You can't open the application "Terminal" because it is not supported on this architecture. [OK]

After talking to Thesis from IRC, he realized that we both pressed "Replace" during the Pacifist install instead of "Update" and decided to try installing with the "Update" button -- and after replacing the kexts he needed, the applications worked. He sent me a zip of the kexts he used, but out of curiosity I asked him to just include the applications themselves that resulted from the Pacifist install with "Update" instead of "Replace" -- they worked perfectly on my system with no changes to my kernel extensions. To clairify, the kexts seemed to have nothing to do with it, the key is the applications themselves.

  • If you have yet to install Leopard and are thinking about using the Envying's Pacifist method (viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2146), press "Update" instead of "Replace" when the dialog boxes pop up during install.

Best of luck,
lazd

What release it is? 1411? Because it is still beta test version, you may have to re-run pacifist a few times. When I made the screenshot, I also experienced a few times crash on it.

I guess if you did the partition verification first with disk utility, it might not show up errors. Anyways there you go! Good luck!

I'm a huge newbie, so that being said... after just reading through your guide, I was following everything well until you got to
10. After pacifist finishes up, download ToH kext Files from post #1. Replace the kernel, and some kext files, in my case, I replaced "AppleACPIPlatform.kext, AppleSMBIOS.kext, IONetworkingFamily.kext" and removed "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext", repair permissions under tiger terminal;
11. Next you have to put your customized hardware kext files into the right location, and repair permissions as well, you can definitely copy those files from your tiger. But be prepared to add some of your dev/ven id into some official kext files;
12. Then reboot your system, press F8 to get to Darwin Bootloader Selecting Menu, choose your Leopard partiton, boot with "-V" to see if there is any kernel panic, report it here with a screenshot picture, to see if anyone else can give you some help how to fix the problem. Good luck!"

Basically, bold and underlined are the instructions that I did not understand / do not know how to execute. I apologize, but could you provide some further explanation to these steps, or point me in a direction so that I can learn?

1. Find hacked kernel for your cpu in post #1 resource link, and put the file into root directory /, to replace original kernel file from apple.
2. To repair permissions, you'd better check this post viewtopic.php?f=16&t=229
3. Customized hardware means your video card, sata drives, and so on, you have to know your hardwares first to apply them.
4. Dev/Ven ID means every hardware has its identification, you can find it from windows hardware manager, and sometimes, apple or h a c k e r s made some general kext files for a series of hardware, but may not list all id's in, that's why you need to manually put them in configuration file of the kext package.
