[Guide] ASUS P5K Vanilla(Plain): Installing Leopard [080111]

Postby chival4ry on Sun Nov 11, 2007 7:09 am

Hi, all. ^^

P5K has some problems, but mostly works fine.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you know how to use AHCI_ICH9 in xp on p5k, please let us know about it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[1] ASUS P5K MainBoard

Image
o pink : 4 SATA Ports o yellow : 1 JMicron SATA Port o blue : 1 JMicron IDE Port

(1) Realtek ALC883, 8 channel High Definition Audio ( Patch - AppleAzaliaAudio.kext - only 2 channel works )

(2) Attansic L1, 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet ( No working - I am using D-Link DFE 538TX PCI like Realtek 8139 )

(3) ICH9 (AHCI & SATA) (working)

(4-1) Setting BIOS (Enhanced Mode) (BIOS Version : 0603) [071126]
- [Main]Tab > Sata Configuration [IDE or AHCI] => [IDE] , [Disabled or Enhanced or Comparable] => [Enhanced] , Configure SATA as [IDE]
- [Advanced]Tab > J-Micron eSATA/PATA Controller [Enabled or Disabled] => [Disabled]
(( Default AHCI & Jmicron AHCI can use, too, but Enhanced is faster and more convenient than 2 AHCIs. ))
(( Default AHCI : o SATA1(down-red) port: Installation(o), Booting(o), Read&Write(o) o SATA2(up-red) port: only Read&Write(o) )) (for SATA HDD & DVD-RW)
(( Enhanced : o SATA1&SATA2 ports: Installation(o), Booting(o), Read&Write(o) )) (for SATA HDD & DVD-RW)
(( Now[080111], [4-1] is somewhat useless. ))

(4-2) Setting BIOS (Enhanced Mode) (BIOS Version : 0406 & 0603 & 0805) [080111]
- [Main]Tab > Sata Configuration [IDE or AHCI] => [IDE] , [Disabled or Enhanced or Comparable] => [Enhanced] , Configure SATA as [IDE]
- [Advanced]Tab > J-Micron eSATA/PATA Controller [Enabled or Disabled] => [Disabled]
(( Enhanced : o SATA1&SATA2 ports: Installation(o), Booting(o), Read&Write(o) )) (for SATA HDD & DVD-RW)
(( At this moment, 0406 is more convenient than other versions because of using Enhanced Mode & Default AHCI Mode. ))

(4-3) Setting BIOS (Default AHCI Mode) (BIOS Version : 0406) [080111]
- [Main]Tab > Sata Configuration [IDE or AHCI] => [AHCI] , Configure SATA as [IDE]
- [Advanced]Tab > J-Micron eSATA/PATA Controller [Enabled or Disabled] => [Disabled]
(( Default AHCI is as fast as Enhanced. ))
(( Default AHCI : o SATA1(down-red) port: Installation(o), Booting(o), Read&Write(o) o SATA2(up-red) port: only Read&Write(?) )) (for SATA HDD & DVD-RW)

(5) SATA3(down-black) & SATA4(up-black) ports : Enhanced Mode (0406 & 0603 & 0805) (working) , Default AHCI Mode (0406) (no working) [080111]

(6) JMicron IDE & SATA ports : working

(7) P5Ks info :

[2] Downgrading 0805 to 0406 (dnjmarlboro) [080111]

(1) Downloading 2 files : AFUDOS211.zip ( ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/flash ) , P5K0406.zip ( ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/socket775/P5K )
(2) Copying AFUDOS.exe(39.3KB) & P5K0406.ROM(1MB) to FDD ( perhaps, or Memory Stick )
(3) Inserting ASUS P5K CD and then rebooting
(4) F8 > Selecting "cd-rom" in the boot menu window > 3) Free Dos command prompt
(5) C:\> A:
(6) A:\> dir
(7) A:\> AFUDOS /N /iP5K0406.ROM
WARNING: Do not trun off power during flash BIOS.

Verifying flash ---- done
Please restart your computer.
(8) A:\> restart
(9) Flashing BIOS - Work Time ( 2 minutes )

[3] Essential files

(1) Recommended Leopard images :
- APPLE.MAC.OSX.LEOPARD.V10.5.ISO-OSX (6.56GB) => osx-leopard105.dmg(6.66GB)
( MD5 : C38902E728DC47A4CCB34AA6143B9BBE ) (ThePirateBay)
- Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard [ToH]-RC2 SSE3/SSE2 Intel Only (4.38GB)
( MD5 : 83909703A60283FFC8F3DA1D8A8594F0 - ToH_x86_9A581_RC2.iso) (ThePirateBay) (easy)

(2) BrazilMac-9a581-Patch.zip ( viewtopic.php?f=16&t=2008 )

(3-1) Post-Install-p5k(vanilla).zip (2.63MB) ( here ) [071126]
- AppleAHCIPort.kext (AHCI : ICH9 & ICH9R) ( My friend [ LeeBack(이백이백님) ] )
- AppleVIAATA.kext
- IOATAFamily.kext (S-ATA : ICH9) (For 2 sata ports)
( podarok : http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php? ... ntry487226 )
Image
- AppleAzaliaAudio.kext (Realtek alc 883) (Modified for p5k) (From me)
- mach_kernel (SynthetiX - MD5 : ebb48dfdeb07a187f71878dc348fd0df )
- Post-Install-p5k(vanilla).zip is old, so the same files had better use Post-Install-p5k-FromKalyway10.5.1.zip.

(3-2) Post-Install-p5k-FromKalyway10.5.1.zip (2.8MB) ( here ) [080111]
- AppleAHCIPort.kext (AHCI : ICH9 & ICH9R)
- AppleVIAATA.kext ( For 4 sata ports : perhaps, poradok` work )
- IOATAFamily.kext
Image
- AppleAzaliaAudio.kext (Realtek alc 883) (Modified for p5k) (From me)
- AppleACPIPlatform.kext ( This mostly helps Reboot-Sleep-Shutdown issues. )
- mach_kernel ( sse2-sse3-10.5-10.5.1-sleep-071117-pcefi-nopcefi.zip - MD5 : 647476C9D1AC9779104874C5DCD1C9CD ) ( = kalyway10.5.1 default kernel : no pc efi )
- ref) : apple original 10.5.1 kernel = kalyway10.5.1 vanilla kernel = iATKOSv1.0ir2 stock kernel (9.8MB) ( MD5 : DF04DBF2369806C30F6D76DCD2D0F70A )

(4) sse2-sse3-10.5-10.5.1-sleep-071117-pcefi-nopcefi.zip (2064kb) ( here ) [071126]
There is the info of this kernel in filename, and in my case it works somewhat well, and ( http://netkas.org/?p=14 )

(5) IONetworkingFamily.kext(TimeMachine-Error35).zip (993kb) ( here ) [071126]
Also looking at the filename, and ( http://netkas.org/?p=8 )

[4] How to use kexts in my case

o BrazilMac-9a581-Patch.zip (brazil)
o Post-Install-p5k(vanilla).zip or Post-Install-p5k-FromKalyway10.5.1.zip(p5k)

(1) Removing
- AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext (brazil)

(2) Replacing
- AppleACPIPlatform.kext (p5k)
- AppleAHCIPort.kext (p5k)
- AppleAzaliaAudio.kext (p5k)
- AppleVIAATA.kext (p5k)
- AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext(brazil)

[6] post-install-patch.sh in Post-Install-p5k(vanilla).zip or Post-Install-p5k-FromKalyway10.5.1.zip

I somewhat edited the post-install-patch.sh which was made by Ramm.
First of all, reading the infos about post-install-patch.sh ( NeverLegal : viewtopic.php?f=16&t=108 )
( Though you replace only a kext, if you use post-install-patch.sh or 9a581PostPatch.sh(brazil), it will reduce some problems. )

(1) post-install-patch.sh

#!/bin/sh

IFS=$'\n'
LEO="/Volumes/Leopard"
EXT="/Users/whitechivalry/Desktop/Post-Install/Extensions"
KER="/Users/whitechivalry/Desktop/Post-Install"

(2) Running post-install-patch.sh on Terminal

[8] DVD HardDisk installation method ( from 9A559 Seed Note )

Referring here ( http://forum.osx86scene.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=1735 )

Procedure to install Leopard using hard disk partitions:

Requirements:
1. Three hard disk partitions internal or external (you could use 2 but 3 recommended)
NOTE: For Intel Macs, your "Partition Map Scheme" must be "GUID Partition Table". For Power PC Macs, your "Partition Map Scheme" must be "Apple Partition Map". Check by doing this: In Disk Utility, click on the volume, click on Partition, See "Partition Map Scheme" listed at the bottom.
( For PC, your "Partition Map Scheme" must be "MBR Partition Table" )

2. The "Leopard_Client_9A559.dmg" disk image (on partition 1)

Brief summary:
1. Booted into partition 1, using Disk Utility, restore the "Mac OS X
Installer Disk Image" onto partition 2

2. Boot into partition 2 and install Mac OS X on partition 3

Procedure:
1. Setup:
- partition 1: Your current boot up volume, also containing the downloaded "Leopard_Client_9A559.dmg" disk image
- partition 2: Ready for the Leopard install disk image to be restored on
- partition 3: Ready for the Leopard OS to be installed on

2. Launch Disk Utility and do the following:
- Click on the partition 2
- Click on the Restore tab
- Drag the "Leopard_Client_9A559.dmg" onto the Source field
- Drag partition 2 onto the Destination field (Note: partition 2 will be erased.) (Note: Drag the partition from the disk list in Disk Utility and not Finder.)
- Click on Restore

3. Boot into partition 2, you will be booted into Mac OS X installation process

4. Install Mac OS X onto partition 3
(If you have only 2 partitions, you will have to erase and install onto partition 1)

Are you sure that this is using the Vanilla kernel? I downloaded that archive and it appears to be the same version from BrazilMac. Plus you didn't mention installing the EFI table. Or am I misunderstanding your use of the word "Vanilla" in the title?

Thanks. I don`t know it because of not using Brazil` Method.

Hi chival4ry,

what are your experiences with our nice plain P5K and Leopard with:
- Standby
- Restart
- Shutdown
- Stability
?

Mayby i will give Leo a try within the next two weeks. Tiger is running really stable - so i hope Leo will do the same.
Perhaps patching a Leo DVD with "our" P5K kexts and sharing it will be a good idea. We will see...

Edit: thanks for your guide...

behnstedt wrote:Hello chival4ry,

I tried your kexts and tip (update) with pacifist today:

The installation worked, I could start Leopard, and sound worked. BUT: The permissions were not right... so I copied the installation packages to the Receipts folder and clicked "repair permissions". Nothing was repaired, but after a system restart, I was able to drag and drop icons and to create folders on the HDD.

But there is one error:

I cannot install a lot of programs, because the installation hangs after installing the packages with the message "Paketquittung verarbeiten" (german) -> (might mean: "Working on paket acknowledgement" or so). Dashcode hangs, the new leo-NVInject installer hangs and the KeychainUpdate, too...

Do you have an idea about that? I didn't found anything about that. If you have no idea, I'll try to create a BrazilMac-DVD with the kexts, that worked for me from your package... I hope that'll do it. I think that pacifist doesn't set the right permissions to some files. Do I have to use the same kexts for a boot-DVD like BrazilMacs, as for the post-patch?

Thanks for your great help
behnstedt

PS: PS2-Keyboard works with BrazilMacs kext. ToHs kext didn't work.

Hello chival4ry,

I have no errors when using diskutil. It says: "All permissions ok." The two threads you mentioned above seem to throw error messages...

I have no UUID or ALC messages. So I think my error must be something other, but I'll try anyway...

Greetings

Hi, I'm a first time poster, and fairly new to the osx86 scene. I have been trying to install leopard on my own or the last 4 days or so, and to say that i have run on some problems would be an understatement...
After reading a lot on the subject, after deciding that I simply couldn't do it because of the ahci problem on the p5k vanilla, and because I dont have a sata dvd-r, I finally found this post. It gave me hope, dammit :evil:
Now I am going to try some more. Couple of questions: Will a usb Dvd work? I am going to patch the dmg myself, should I use the brazilmac prepatch or do you guys have something for the P5K?
I have a q6600 g0 and an 8800gt, both kinda new (especially the 8800gt) will they work? Something I should do beforehand?
Any help is greatly appreciated, I really, really hope this works. Any help is appreciated, and by the way I can settle for tiger too, doesn't have to be leopard. Just something stable with lan(I am willing to by a new ethernet card) working will do...Again any input is appreciated

Post-Install-p5k(vanilla).zip is down, any possibility of a mirror? Is it the file with the kexts ?

Thanks :)

o fustyler, you had better try IONetworkingFamily.kext.zip (992kb).

You can try "[7] DVD HardDisk installation method".

( Will a usb Dvd work? )
Perhaps, it works fine.

o q6600 (good) , 8800gt (yet no good - http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php? ... start=1300 )

( I am willing to by a new ethernet card )
I recommend Realtek 8139 or D-Link DFE 538TX PCI(me).
